Tiffani Galicza

This month, we’ve been sharing some truly inspiring pieces from our colleagues. They have been thought-provoking reads, and we thank you all for appreciating these important messages.

Today we are sharing the last of this series – a beautifully phrased homage from Tiffani Galicza, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advisor.

The theme for Black History month 2023, Saluting our Sisters, pays homage to Black women who had contributions ignored, ideas appropriated, and voices silenced.

In the realm of history and innovation, black women shine,

Their inventions, remarkable, truly divine.

During Black History Month, lets pay them respect,

Their brilliance and ingenuity, we mustn't forget.

Let us remember Alice H. Parker's name,

For she brought warmth to homes with her heating flame.

Her invention, the gas furnace, a true delight,

Heating homes and bringing comfort, day, and night.

Next, Mary Kenner, a pioneer in her own right,

Her invention, sanitary towels, brought comfort and respite.

She cared for women's needs, with empathy and grace,

Her contribution to feminine hygiene, an invaluable embrace.

Mary Hunt, a name that deserves recognition,

With the help of a cantaloupe, persistence, and vision.

She helped with the evolution of Penicillin, saving countless lives.

Assisting fighting infections, A medical marvel, the world still thrives.

Shirley Anne Jackson, a trailblazer in telecommunications,

Her inventions brought us closer, bridging vast separations.

With her contributions to caller ID and touch-tone,

She made communication easier, and let’s face it, we’d be lost without our phones.

Next, we honour Marie Van Brittan Brown,

For her security system allowed us to feel safe and sound,

Her invention, the precursor to modern home security,

Made us all feel safe, a true technological visionary.

Gladys West, a mathematician with a brilliant mind,

Her work on satellite positioning was one of a kind.

Her calculations paved the way for GPS navigation,

Helping us travel the world with accuracy, no matter the destination.

Lisa Gelobter, a visionary in the animation sphere,

Brining our texts to life, spreading joy far and near.

With her innovation, we can now share moving images with a click,

Adding a touch of magic to our online conversations, a GIF always does the trick.

Through their ingenuity and determination, they've paved the way,

Inspiring future generations, each and every day.

Let us honour these women, their achievements grand,

Black female inventors, sisters, we salute you, you have truly helped our world expand.
