International Nurses Day 2023 – Katie’s Story

Date: 12 May 2023

International Nurses Day Website Quote from Katie Holmes, Pre-Hospital Practitioner '	It’s not easy, it’s a whole different world going from the protected walls of the hospital, to making your own decisions as an independent clinician, but for the first time in a long time I have true job satisfaction.'

Katie Holmes is a qualified nurse, working as a pre-hospital practitioner within the Trust.

I’m Katie, I’m a pre-hospital practitioner (PHP) who joined the trust in November 2022 for the first cohort of PHPs, along with 13 other nurses across the east of England. My role currently is very similar to a paramedic working front line, with the hope in the future to expand our scope to be able to use more traditional based nursing skills within the emergency setting.

I've always loved emergency care; ward nursing didn't interest me during training. When the opportunity came to be able to take my knowledge and skills into a new setting, I jumped at the chance. I love that I can spend time with patients giving them true patient centred care spending time with someone who, at that point, needs help. Being able to see sunlight is an additional bonus!

I would, and have, recommended this role to other colleagues. It’s not easy, it’s a whole different world going from the protected walls of the hospital, to making your own decisions as an independent clinician, but for the first time in a long time I have true job satisfaction.

I would like to thank the incredible people I have worked alongside in mid Essex (and everyone I’ve bumped into when out of area) for their support and encouragement!

Does this role sound like it could be for you? We are hiring pre-hospital practitioners now!
