National Sibling Day: Gary and Nick Ball

This National Sibling Day, we’ve spoken to members of #TeamEEAST who work alongside their siblings about their experience of working together.

 

Introduce yourselves!

We are Gary and Nick from the central Leading Operations Managers team here at EEAST.

 

What are your roles within EEAST?

We are both Paramedics and Leading Operations Managers working in Norfolk.

 

Did you know as a child that you wanted to work for the ambulance service or in healthcare?

Nick: No, I always thought I would join the Police.

Gary: No, I wanted to join the Military and spent 10 years in the British Army prior to joining EEAST.

 

What interested you most about joining the ambulance service?

Nick: The ability to show care and compassion to those in their time of greatest need.

Gary: I was in the Royal Army Medical Corps and wanted to remain ‘hands on’. At the time I was also an RAF Co-Responder which I thoroughly enjoyed, so decided to leave the Army to join as a Student Paramedic.

 

Did your sibling inspire you to join the ambulance service? Or did you inspire them to join?

Nick: Gary inspired me to join, having spent some time with the Police as a Special Constable I needed a new challenge, Gary already worked for the Trust so I followed him in and haven't looked back.

Gary: Nick had talked about it for a long time, so we got him out on a shift as an observer on a rapid response vehicle and the rest is history.

 

Do you get to work together at all? If so, what’s it like working with each other?

Half of our rota we work the same shifts, it’s a really good dynamic as we have a good understanding of each other’s strengths and work as a team.

 

Does work come up in conversation a lot during family dinners?

When we get to make it to family dinners around shifts, work very rarely comes up, we try hard to keep work at work.

 

Is there anything you would like to say to your sibling this National Siblings Day?

Nick: I'll always be the younger one!

Gary: I’ll always be the better looking one!
